FAQs: Direct Debit for Membership
As a bank-to-bank payment method, failure rates with Direct Debits are typically much lower than with other payment methods such as cards. This is because Direct Debits are set-up on a bank account using a sortcode and account number. In comparison, card transactions are set-up using card details and debit and credit cards (unlike bank accounts) can expire or be cancelled because they have been lost or stolen

Yes! The organisation is in control. If a collection amount needs to be changed, e.g. due to additional products or services consumed, or if there is an inflationary increase in the membership price, then this is easy to do with Direct Debits. The payer would need to be provided with Advance notice of the amount in line with the Advance Notice period and then the revised amount can be collected as part of the usual Direct Debit collection process.
Direct Debits, if used, will remain active for as long as necessary – unless cancelled. This means that the membership can continue unhindered unless actively cancelled.
Yes! Direct Debits allows for automatic renewals for members. They don’t need to take an action to re-join or make payment.
The payer would need to be provided with Advance Notice of the amount, date and potentially the frequency of Direct Debit collections before the first membership collection is taken. Thereafter they would need to be notified if the amount or date changes. With a renewal, the organisation is in control and renewals can be scheduled in advance of the membership expiration date. This proactive approach reduces the likelihood of memberships unintentionally lapsing due to oversight or forgetfulness.
Bacs provide feedback in the form of Bacs reports. These include:
- AUDDIS reports (Automated Direct Debit Instruction Service Report). These contain details of rejected and/or returned Direct Debit Instructions (DDIs).
- ADDACS reports (Advice of Direct Debit Cancellation and Amendments). These will update organisations if a payer cancels their Direct Debit.
- ARUDD reports (Advice of Returned Unpaid Direct Debits). These provide information on failed Direct Debits and the reason why.
